One Day Seminar on Environment Management held on 10 Dec 2012


Saintgits Institute of Management in association with Thanal conducted a One day seminar on Environment Management with the theme 'Energy, Environment and Climate Change'. The seminar was held in the Seminar Hall of SIM from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30. p.m. The seminar was attended by 115 students of both S1 and S3 MBA Batches.
The Seminar was addressed by Shri Jayakumar C, Director of Thanal and Dr. Abey George, Assistant Professor, Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Associate Dean Dr. Roji George presided over the function. Shri Jayakumar formally inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp and then addressed the students. In his session Shri Jayakumar spoke of the disparity of food distribution, about sensitizing the youth on environmental issues and e.waste management along with highlighting some of the current problems with regard to environment management.  The second session was addressed by Dr. Abey George who spoke on Nuclear Energy, atoms for peace and destruction and the alternative sources of energy. 
Following lunch break, a 20 minute internationally acclaimed movie The Story of Stuff  was screened. This is a short animated documentary about the lifecycle of material goods. The documentary is critical of excessive consumerism and promotes sustainability. Filmmaker Annie Leonard wrote and narrated the film. Following the movie Shri Jayakumar C led a panel discussion of the students on the movie and its applications in their lives. 8 students of the S1 and S3 MBA batch participated in the discussion which revolved around the environmental issues in their native places and its impact on the whole on society. The discussion was led by Shri Jayakumar for 35 minutes.

US Credit Rating Downgrade and European Debt Crisis; Impact on Indian Economy and Stock Market

A seminar was conducted on 24-08-11 in Saintgits Institute of Management in the broad area of Global economy and capital market. With the recent incidents in the stock markets across the globe, it was essential for the investing public to know and understand the impact of the trends on the capital markets as well as global economies. The future looked extremely volatile with the downgrading of rating for US by Standard and Poors. What will be the effect of such measure on Indian economy was a question remaining with many Indians. With this in mind, Saintgits Institute of Management in association with Geojit PNB Paribas Ltd organized a seminar on 'US Credit Rating Downgrade and European Debt Crisis; Impact on Indian Economy and Stock Market'. Dr. V K Vijayakumar (Investment Strategist, Geojit PNB Paribas Ltd) and Mr. P S Menon (Chairman, Cochin Stock Brokers Ltd.) were the key speakers.

Various perspectives on the US down grading and why India need not worry too much about the same was also elucidated. There were more than 100 external participants from academia and industry. The programme was well appreciated by all the participants.

National Conference on Finance and Banking 2011








The fourth National Conference on Finance & Banking- NCFB-2011 was conducted on 11th and 12th of November, 2011 at SIM. The conference was inaugurated by Dr.V.A. Joseph, Managing Director and CEO, South Indian Bank. In his keynote address, he narrated the story of transformation of South Indian Bank in the recent time. Two books authored by Dr.Roji George, Associate Dean and Prof. Thomas Varghese were released by Dr.V.A.Joseph. The Center for Financial Services was inaugurated jointly by the eminent speakers. A panel discussion was arranged on financial services under the aegis of The Center for Financial Services. The panelists were Sri.S.Radhakrishnan (AVP and Branch Head, Axis bank, Thiruvalla), Sri.T.U.John (Senior Branch Manager, LIC of India , Kottayam), Sri. Ravi Jain (Manager, NSE Ltd, Cochin), Sri.N.P.Rajive (Dean, Hedge school of Applied Economics) and Sri. Sajan Roy (Cluster Manager, Tata Capital, Kerala). The conference received 56 abstracts of papers and 25 papers were presented in the conference. The valedictory function was graced by Dr.Srikrishna S. Mahajan, Professor, Sivaji University, Kolhapur. Assistant Professor K.Subramoniam and Assistant Professor M.Krishnan were the Faculty Coordinators of the Conference.

Emerging Dimensions in Marketing

National Conference in Marketing 22, 23 November  2012

In line with the declared objective of promoting academic  research, Saintgits Institute of Management, in association with Department of Business Administration, Annamalai University organized a national conference in marketing on 22nd and 23rd November 2012 at Saintgits Campus. The conference was co-ordinated by Professor Thomas Varghese & Associate Professor Ajith Thomas and chaired by Dr Roji George, Associate Dean, Saintgits Inst. of Mgt.

39 participants from various parts of the country including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Suratkal, Manipal, Coimbatore, Pondicherry, Chidambaram and different parts of Kerala attended the conference and presented 25 papers in different areas of marketing.

Mr. Soney Jose, Senior Vice President and Business Head - Emerging Enterprises Group, HDFC Bank, Mumbai was the Chief Guest at the inaugural session and spoke on developments in services sector, especially in financial services. In a key note speech on day 2, Dr. Joffi Thomas of IIM-K spoke on marketing in turbulent times and highlighted the need to have a relook at the way we see market.

As a part of the association with Annamalai University, a team of eight professors led by Prof. Dr. B. Natarajan and Dr. S. K. Nagarajan attended the conference, presented papers and chaired technical sessions. Other senior faculty who chaired sessions included Dr. Siby Zacharias (Professor, MG University), Dr. Joffi Thomas and Dr Vineeth Kumar Nair (Professor, TKM Institute of Management.)

An edited volume of the selected articles, titled 'Marketing: Emerging Dimensions' with ISBN is being published by Excel Books based on the papers presented at the conference.

The conference was appreciated for the well organized functioning  and for its success in bringing together academic researchers and research scholars.

Conference on Emerging Dimensions in Marketing







If the nineteenth century belonged to Europe and the twentieth to US, Twenty First century is expected to be that of Asia with two key players - China and India. In a highly competitive market with disappearing boundaries, no business organization can succeed without a clear strategy for marketing. That calls for deep knowledge of developments and trends in marketing functions.

'Emerging Dimensions in Marketing', a national level conference on trends in marketing was held on 19th and 20th November 2010 with the objective of bringing to a common platform the academicians and marketing professionals to share knowledge and insight. It provided an opportunity for disseminating new research findings & discussing practices, techniques and contemporary trends in marketing.  32 select papers were presented from areas of Corporate Branding, Consumer Behavior, Marketing Communications, Rural Marketing, Marketing of Services, Retail Marketing, Sales and Distribution, Green Marketing and Tourism/Destination Marketing

The conference was inaugurated by Mr P V Ramesh, State Marketing Head and GM, Zuari Cements, who talked about need for innovation in marketing and emergence of  commodity branding. The external chairs were Dr Omkumar Krishnan, IMT Ghaziabad; Dr. Githa Hegde, Chair Mktg, Welingkar Institute of Management Bangalore; Dr. Lubna Nafees, IMT Ghaziabad;   Dr. S. K. Nagarajan, Associate Professor Mktg, Annamalai University; Dr. Francis Cherunilam, Professor CUSAT and Dr Molly Koshy, Professor SMS, CUSAT  Cochin.

The plenary session on 'Marketing in the Post Recession Era' was chaired by Prof A. Sreekumar, Dean Management Studies, Goa University. In addition to academic experts, panelists included Mr. Jacob Thomas, VP, Lowe Lintas Market Research, and Mr Oommen Mammen, Director KVM Group of Institutions and former GM Marketing, Smith & Nephew.

An edited volume titled 'Marketing in the Post Recession Era' published by Excel Books, New Delhi covered the major themes of the conference with 21 select papers presented in the conference.

Environmental Seminar

 A one day seminar on Environmental Management was organized in Saintgits Institute of Management on 20th Dec 2010. The seminar was addressed by Dr. John Bryden and Dr. Karen Refsgaard from Nrowegian Agricultural Research Institute, Norway. Nineteen external participants from near by institutions participated in this seminar along with S3 MBA students of SIM. 
An introduction to systems thinking and systems approaches to the integrated assessment of environmental, economic and social outcomes of different policy options or market scenarios by Dr. John M Bryden was the introductory session. Dr. Karen Refsgaard, Senior Researcher, engaged the next session on Institutional, economic and social issues around solid and human waste, including recycling systems and ecological sanitation in particular.
This was followed by student paper presentations. Three teams of students presented papers on current environmental issues - Eco Aesthetic Perspective in the myth of Kalluruthy; Sarpa Kavu - Conservation of Medicinal plants; and Bio-medical waste disposal in Hospitals. Dr. John Bryden engaged a final session on Institutional, economic and social issues around renewable energy as a regional development option in rural regions. This was followed by an interactive session with the participants on the themes discussed by the speakers.  The Seminar was coordinated by Assistant Professor Bindu John, SIM.

National Conference on Finance and Banking 2010

NCFB 2010: The Third National conference on Finance & Banking- NCFB 2010 was inaugurated by Dr Martin Maurer, Secretary General, Association of Foreign Banks in Switzerland in the presence of Mr R Vijayendiran, Head of Portfolio Managers of BNP Paribas who gave the keynote address in the inaugural function. Dr.K.V.S.S.Narayana Rao, Professor, Finance of NITTIE, Mumbai handled a special session on Research in Finance in the afternoon session of the first day. Forty eight researchers from different parts of the country presented papers in the various technical sessions on Capital Market, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Banking and Insurance. The various sessions were chaired by Dr.K.V.S.S.Narayana Rao, Dr Malabika Deo  (Pondicherry University, Pondicherry), Dr.Srinivasa Rao Gangadharan (IFMR, Chennai) and Dr. Shrikrishna S. Mahajan (Shvaji University, Kolhapur). The conference was conducted in association with Travancore Management Association, Kottyam.  The proceedings of the conference was published as an edited volume titled 'Rediscovering Finance & Banking'  Excel Publishers, N. Delhi (Editors : James P S, Roji George and Roshna Varghese.

Seminar on 'Publishing in International Journals'

The second Seminar organized by Saintgits Institute of Management on publishing was titled as "Publishing in International Journals". The Seminar was conducted on 3rd January 2009 at Hotel Presidency, Cochin. The resource person was Prof. (Dr.) Om Prakash Gupta, Professor, Prairie View A & M University, USA. The topics covered were-  formulating a publication strategy,   publication process, significance on abstract and introduction sections , importance of literature, reference styles, various types of journals, classification, reputation, etc. and   do's and don'ts of writing academic papers. Twenty seven faculty members from various institutions participated in this programme.

National Conference on Finance & Banking 2009

NCFB 2009: The second national conference on Finance & Banking- NCFB 2009 was conducted on 28th & 29th August 2009 at SIM. The conference was inaugurated y Shri R Anand, Partner, Earnst & Young, Chennai in the presence of Shri Giby George, Regional Head- ICICI Bank, Cochin who gave the keynote address in the inaugural function.  Shri Alex K Babu, Managing Director, Hedge Equities, Cochin gave a talk on capital market. Forty one researchers from varied areas like Capital Market, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Banking, Financial Services and Insurance presented their research papers.  The various sessions were chaired by Dr. Amitah Guptha (University of Delhi), Dr Matiyur Rehman (Independent University, Dhaka, Bangladesh) Dr Malabika Deo  (Pondicherry University, Pondicherry). The proceedings of the conference was published as an edited volume titled 'Finance & Banking: A Collection of Contemporary Research (Edn) by Excel Publishers, N. Delhi (Editors : James P S, Roji George and Roshna Varghese).

Seminar on Future of Personal Insurance in India

Insurance in India, in spite of its enormous potential is still in nascent stages. Post liberalization, this sector has emerged as a major growth area. A number of new players have entered the field and new products and services are being offered to the public. While the importance of Health Insurance is being felt by a large number of people in India, UNIT linked Insurance plans and other pension plans are getting wider acceptance.

A seminar was organized by Saintgits Institute of Management with the participation of senior executives from the Life Insurance Corporation India and other Insurance companies on emerging trends in insurance sector.

The seminar was able to highlight the developments taking place in personal insurance sector from a management student/teacher's perspective. The key areas covered include Future of Insurance Sector in India, Issues in Health Insurance, Relevance of Life Insurance, Insurance as a saving option and Career opportunities in Insurance. Students and faculty from several neighboring MBA institutions added value to the seminar by participating in it.

A Seminar on Human Resources Practices in Management

A seminar on Human Resources Practices was held from 23rd to 25th July, 2009 at Kottayam, Kerala. Insightful papers at Contemporary HR issues were presented by leading practioners and scholars during this summit. The proceedings were enriched by meaningful deliberations which underlined that in the ever changing business paradigm, Human Resource Management have to undergo continuous change and reinvention. The conference also highlighted that meaningful 'next practices' can be co-evolved through debate, deliberations and ideations amongst practioners and scholars. The summit proceedings were published as a book.

A three day workshop on Research Methodology was organized with Prof. N. Vivek of PSG Institute of Management as the resource person from 2-4 July, 2008 at SIM. The workshop gave an orientation on Research Methodology and the application of SPSS in research.

National Conferences on Finance &  Banking

NCFB 2008 : The first national conference on Finance & Banking- NCFB 2008 was held on 8th and 9th September, 2008. The conference was inaugurated by  Shri. A. P. Kurian, Chairman, Association of Mutual Funds in India, Mumbai in the presence of many luminaries from academia and industry. Shri. H Suresh Prabhu, Executive Director of South Indian Bank Ltd. Trichur gave the keynote address in the inaugural function.  The conference received 82 abstracts and through a blind review process, 54 papers were selected for presentation. The papers were from the areas of (1) Capital Market (2) Corporate Finance (3) Corporate Governance (4) Derivatives  (5) Banking (6) Financial Services and (7) Insurance. The various sessions were chaired by Dr. T. Mallikarjunappa (Mangalore University, Karnataka), Dr Basabi Bhattacharya (Javadavpur University, West Bengal), Dr. K. G. Sahadevan (Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow) and Dr.  G. Simon Thattil (University of Kerala, Kerala). The conference was conducted in association with Travancore Management Association, Kottayam with a small financial support from All India Council for Technical Education, N. Delhi.  The proceedings of the conference was published as an edited volume titled 'Finance & Banking: An Anthology of Contemporary Research' by Excel Publications, N.
