Free Software Foundation

The SAINTGITS Free Software Cell (SFSC), established on 31st March, 2009, is dedicated to promoting knowledge about free software. The cell was inaugurated by Dr. V.A. Sasi Kumar, Member, Board of Directors, FSFI.

The SFSC promotes the development and use of the GNU operating system, used widely in its GNU/Linux variant. It has been developed to help the students of Saint Gits to advance their technical knowledge in the development of software.

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

  • The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).

  • The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).

  • The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3).

The first workshop organised under the SFSC was the “Introduction to Python”. It was conducted by ILUG, Cochin.
